Sermon Notes: “Dress for the Occasion”

Pastor Matt Austin delivered an encouraging message about spiritual rebirth and preparing yourself for God’s sudden deliverance.

  • The Two Birthdays: Every believer has a natural biological birth (bios) and a spiritual rebirth (zoe) [44:04], which means being made alive through the power of the Holy Spirit after being spiritually dead [44:39].

  • The Sovereignty & Nature of the Spirit: Using Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus in John 3, he compared the Holy Spirit to the wind (pneuma) [57:21]. The wind is invisible but its effects are undeniable [01:01:13]; it is completely sovereign and beyond human control, requiring us to yield to it rather than fight it [58:42].

  • Suddenly Miracles: God often moves “suddenly” [01:06:19]. Using the miracle of the lame man at the beautiful gate (Acts 3) [01:09:21] and Jesus turning water to wine [01:12:13], Pastor Matt emphasized that a sudden move of God acts as a “miracle of time”—accomplishing in a single moment what normally takes years.

  • Dressing for Your Deliverance: Drawing from Exodus 12:11, he spoke on how the Israelites were told to eat the Passover with their cloaks tucked in, shoes on, and staffs in hand [40:30]. He challenged the church to put their “shoes back on” [01:16:43], step out of comfortability, and put their sails up in expectation before they even see the wind blow [01:24:52].

  • The Blind Bartimaeus Example: Like Bartimaeus throwing off his beggar’s cloak before he could even see Jesus (Mark 10:50) [01:21:40], believers must cast off their old identities and act on their faith and healing before it physically manifests [01:22:46].
