Illuminating Your Path: Taking the Next Step in Faith
Have you ever looked in the mirror and realized you didn’t quite like the reflection staring back at you?
In our spiritual journeys, it’s easy to get comfortable, check off the boxes, and assume we are doing just fine. But God doesn’t call us to a stagnant faith. In the continuation of our series at Cornerstone Church, Pastor Tina challenged us to look closely at our spiritual progression, evaluate our daily habits, and trust the light God provides for our path [01:10:59].
If you missed the message or want to dive deeper into the core truths, here is a breakdown of how we can actively navigate the path God has lit for us.
1. The Reality of the Path: One Step at a Time
Drawing from Psalms 119:105, “Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path,” Pastor Tina reminded us of a crucial truth about biblical lamps [01:10:36]: they only gave enough light for the very next step, not the entire path. [01:09:47]
We often demand that God show us the entire blueprint for the next ten years. However, walking by faith means moving forward even when we can only see right in front of us [01:10:09]. Much like a motion-censored light, it is our active movement that activates and demonstrates our faith [01:10:17].
2. Starting with Sincere Repentance
Every true spiritual journey begins at the same place: Acts 2:38 [01:12:21].
“Then Peter said unto them, repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” [01:12:26]
Repentance doesn’t have to be complicated. It means acknowledging God for who He is and genuinely saying, “I’m sorry for what I’ve done.” [01:13:12] But true repentance requires a U-turn—turning away from the things we are sorry for rather than trying to build a relationship with God while remaining exactly the same [01:13:53]. No matter where you are, even if you are only ready for that first step of repentance, it is the spark that begins the journey [01:14:24].
3. Confronting the Mirror
Pastor Tina shared a powerful, transparent conversation she had with a man who looked in the mirror and admitted, “Pastor Tina, my life is out of whack. My habits are out of whack, and I don’t like what I see.” [01:15:56]
When the Holy Spirit begins to illuminate areas of our lives that need correcting, it isn’t to push us away; it’s a sign of growth [01:18:11]. If God has the power to deliver you from major strongholds in your past, handling your current daily habits and minor adjustments is a piece of cake for Him [01:17:42].
4. Discriminating Voices: God vs. The Enemy
As we try to fix what we see in the mirror, we often struggle to distinguish between God’s direction and the enemy’s whispers [01:20:34]. Pastor Tina provided five practical ways to know who is speaking to you [01:20:48]:
-
Conviction vs. Condemnation: God convicts us in love; the enemy brings guilt, condemnation, and shame [01:20:57].
-
Encouragement vs. Fear: God’s voice reassures us; the enemy’s voice discourages and frightens us [01:21:23].
-
Calm vs. Obsession: God’s voice calms our spirits; the enemy causes us to obsess and worry [01:21:35].
-
Comfort vs. Chaos: God brings comfort; the enemy introduces chaos and compromise [01:21:44].
-
Clarity vs. Confusion: God operates in clarity and confirmation; the enemy relies on confusion [01:21:53].
5. A Challenge to the Seasoned Believer
In a poignant moment of pastoral accountability, a challenge was issued to the “seasoned saints” in the building [01:21:53].
It’s easy to claim decades of walking with Christ, but we must ask ourselves: Are we reading our Bibles more or less than when we started? [01:22:57] Are we studying the Word with the same hunger? [01:23:22] When was the last time we sat down to guide a new believer through a Bible study? [01:23:40] We cannot coast on past growth if we are relapsing on the basic principles of God’s Word [01:24:33].
Moving Forward: Keeping the Lamp Lit
A vibrant spiritual life requires fresh oil, which only comes through consistency in the basic disciplines: intentional prayer, diving into the Word, and maintaining an honest heart before God [01:31:53].
Don’t let your spiritual walk stall. Pick one subject in scripture you are curious about and start reading [01:32:20]. Build a household of prayer [01:30:40]. Look into the mirror of the Word, accept the next step God lights up for you, and resolve that there is no turning back [01:38:16].
