Lace Up Your Boots: Stepping Into Your Mandate, Mission, and Message

Are you tired of just sitting on the sidelines watching the world twist and turn, wondering when things are going to change? It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the culture around us, but what if the answer isn’t waiting for the world to calm down? What if the answer is already living inside of you?

This past Sunday at Cornerstone Church, Pastor Jonathan Godair delivered a powerful, timely message that challenges every single one of us to move from being simple spectators to active history-shakers. If you’ve been feeling a pull to step into something deeper, more authentic, and truly impactful, this message is exactly what your soul needs to hear.

The Core Scripture: Called in Our Imperfection

Pastor Jonathan took us straight to the final, history-shaping words of Jesus found in Matthew 28:16-20, often referred to as The Great Commission.

The context of this moment is incredibly freeing. Jesus is standing on a mountain in Galilee physically preparing to ascend to heaven. He is looking at the 11 remaining disciples—men who were far from flawless. In fact, verse 17 explicitly notes: “When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.” Our modern cultural expectations tell us that we need to have it all together, possess an academic pedigree, or achieve perfection before we can make a difference. But God’s truth completely flips that script. Jesus didn’t wait for the disciples to stop doubting before giving them the ultimate assignment. The mission of God does not wait for our perfection; it runs through our ordinary obedience. He calls the willing, not the flawless [43:02].

The Practical Breakdown: Mandate, Mission, and Message

To help us digest this massive divine assignment, the sermon broke our calling down into three distinct, actionable pillars [38:06]:

  • 1. The Mandate: GO We are not told to sit, wait safely at a distance, or just try to maintain our comfort [45:22]. We are commanded to go into our workplaces, our local grocery stores, the bleachers at our kids’ games, and our schools [46:04]. If you have breath in your lungs, you are deployed [46:18].

  • 2. The Mission: MAKE DISCIPLES Jesus didn’t call us to collect superficial fans or social media followers; He called us to build committed followers of Christ [46:50]. Disciple-making means walking through the valleys and victories with people, teaching them the Word, and sharing our lives until they turn around and disciple someone else [47:37]. It’s about spiritual multiplication, not religious maintenance [48:05].

  • 3. The Message: JESUS The entire New Testament pulses with this exact same rhythm. In fact, the commission is given five times across the Gospels and Acts [56:03]. The mandate is to go, the mission is to preach, and the message is strictly and simply Jesus [58:05].

Starting Where Your Feet Stand

We often make the mistake of wanting a massive platform before we serve, but Acts 1:8 shows us exactly how to start expanding our borders locally [50:04]:

  • Jerusalem: Your immediate home. (Men and women, we are the shepherds of our households) [50:39].

  • Judea: Your local community.

  • Samaria: The people who are completely unlike us [51:32].

  • The Ends of the Earth: Everyone, everywhere.

Too many Christians want to fly overseas to get a passport stamp for a mission trip before they are willing to walk across the street to help their neighbor [51:59].

The Takeaway & Call to Heart

The most freeing yet challenging takeaway from this week’s message is that we have been given real, tangible authority to push back darkness—but authority requires movement. We cannot be a church that treats Sunday as a country club or a temporary weekly refuel [49:15, 54:37]. Church is a training ground for warfare and witness [54:37].

God is inviting the addicted, the broken, the proud, the forgotten, and the shamed to His table, and He has placed the invite right in our mouths [01:04:36, 01:07:30]. It is time to stop watching others walk out what God has uniquely commanded you to do [01:07:45].

“We have the mission, we have the mandate, and we have the message. It’s easy to talk church, but we are to be the church.” [01:10:28]

Conclusion

Cornerstone family, let’s lace up our boots, put on our backpacks, and get ready to hit the streets this year [27:45, 01:08:57]! There are six days out of the week where we are outside of the church building walls—that is where our assignment, our privilege, and our joy truly live [01:10:51].

Let’s stop waiting for perfect conditions and step out in faith, knowing that He has promised to be with us always, even to the very end of the age [40:13, 01:06:29].

We love you, Cornerstone. Have an incredible week living out the call!
