How are you planning to cross the threshold into your next season?

On the final Sunday of the year, the pastoral team at Cornerstone Church joined forces for a unique, tag-team message titled “Refined.” Four distinct voices shared the pulpit, delivering a seamless, practical roadmap for anyone who wants to break free from old cycles and step into a fresh chapter of purpose, authority, and freedom.

As Pastor Tina noted, “The way you end a season is exactly how you start the next one.” If you are ready to leave the weight behind and move forward, here are four powerful keys from the message to help you refine your life for what’s ahead.

1. Stay on the Potter’s Wheel

Pastor Calvin Willis kicked off the message with a reminder from Jeremiah 18:1–6, where the prophet goes down to the potter’s house and watches him shape clay on a wheel. When the pot becomes marred in the potter’s hand, he doesn’t throw it away—he re-forms it into another vessel that seems best to him.

It is easy to let the world or your past define who you are. People might point to your old mistakes, a divorce, or past struggles with addiction and disqualify you. But when you are in the hands of the Master, He is the only One who qualifies you.

Pottery in biblical times wasn’t just decorative art; it was built for utility—to hold water, food, and essential resources. You were created with a distinct purpose. Even if 2024 left you feeling cracked, chipped, or broken, your job is simple: Stay on the wheel. Allow God’s living water and His Word to continuously reshape, mold, and strengthen you.

2. Stand on Business (Faith is Biblical!)

Next, Minister Marco stepped up to challenge our baseline spiritual architecture. Drawing a parallel to modern hurricane building standards in Florida—where homes are structurally engineered to withstand category-3 and category-4 winds—he asked: What does your spiritual foundation look like when a storm hits?

Using a favorite phrase of the next generation, Marco reminded us to “stand on business” when it comes to the Kingdom. According to the dictionary, standing on business means taking care of your responsibilities, following through, and sticking to your values.

Scripturally, 1 Corinthians 16:13 tells us to, “Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.” * Distraction-Free Living: If people try to drag you into gossip, negativity, or doubt about your church, your family, or your leaders, your response should be simple: “I don’t have time for that. I’m busy focusing on my Father’s business.”

  • The Ultimate Foundation: When you plant your life on the true Cornerstone (Isaiah 28:16), you can confidently navigate shifting winds without breaking or panicking.

3. Choose a “First Day” Perspective

Pastor George took the stage to remind us that we serve a God of perfect order and divine beginnings. Looking back at Genesis chapter 1, God stepped into a world that was completely formless, empty, and covered in darkness, and His very first decree was, “Let there be light.” The scriptures mark this moment by saying the evening and the morning were the first day. Pastor George challenged everyone with a defining choice: Are you going to choose a “first day” perspective or settle into a “first night” mentality?

Even when the year brings real, painful heartbreaks—like the sudden, tragic loss of his own 20-year-old niece, Camille—there is still a kingdom victory to be found. Camille left behind a journal detailing her passion for bringing people to church and winning souls for God. That is a legacy of light, not darkness.

Jesus could have risen from the dead at any moment, but in accordance with God’s perfect order, He rose early in the morning on the first day of the week (Mark 16:2). If you are currently sitting in darkness or a season of grief, remember that God is the God of new beginnings. Shake off the night and step into His light.

4. Unpack the Baggage and Drop the Bricks

Closing out the message, Pastor Tina provided a visual illustration that brought the entire sermon series home. Walking through the sanctuary, she began collecting purses, bags, and suitcases from the congregation, piling them onto her shoulders until the weight became visibly exhausting.

Too many of us try to step into a brand-new year while stubbornly hauling all the accumulated baggage of the past. We pack our spiritual suitcases with hidden bricks of:

  • Guilt and regret over parenting or past failures

  • Anger and deep-seated bitterness over how we’ve been treated

  • Chronic worry, fear, and anxieties about the future

  • Old childhood traumas and labels that people placed on us

Pastor Tina challenged the room: “You can do everything the other pastors told you to do, but if you don’t drop the baggage, your walk will still be in vain because you are carrying too much weight.”

Take Back Your Atmosphere

It is time to exercise your God-given spiritual authority. Stop passively allowing anxiety, depression, or rebellion to set the tone in your home. Change the music, change the language, and pray over your household with bold confidence.

As the service concluded, the altars were filled with people physically laying down their heavy weights, choosing to cross into the next season completely unburdened.

What bricks are you still carrying in your backpack? Bring them to the cross, leave them at the feet of the Master, and start your “First Day” in complete freedom.
